Bangladesh - Beyond Garments, Past Brick Crushers

Bangladesh owes so much to the hard working women and men in the garment industry. They can produce awesome quality over here. It is a shame that the never ending profit maximizing and sheer greed puts these people in danger at their work. And I am not talking only about the local factory owners, but some big foreign brands and their policies are to blame as well. It is better to produce the quality and pay a little bit more than purchasing the cheapest of products available. Quality products can only be produced by factories who respect their workers, work conditions and environment.

My advice to all of you shoppers out there; buy quality and be prepared to pay a little bit extra for it.

To honor the Bangladeshi garment workers I decided to produce some quality in this picture above. And for those about to mock; I did my ompelukoneajokortti already back in 1986!

What next Bangladesh?

The last few years up until now have been vibrant and bustling in Bangladesh. The country has been growing slowly out of poverty and the famous corruption, bureaucracy and political elitism have not been so visible as before. It is still there, thought, and sadly the upcoming elections mean that the political riots are reaching the streets again. This time with a nasty side kick called religious fanaticism.

Let's not be intimidated by the forces of stupidity because like so many times before, Bangladesh overcomes the trouble and moves on towards the better future. That is what I believe when I get down to talks with young Bangladeshi entrepreneurs. Entrepreneurs carry hope with them - hope and strong will to change things. Many of them sincerely want to contribute to build a brighter tomorrow for their country and their people.

One of the initiatives that was thrown at me and my dear friend, ever so fearless traveler Heikki Leskelä from Bluebiit, seemed particularly interesting and close to our hearts. Why don't you boys boost up the start-up scene in Dhaka? That dart hit the bulls-eye! We'd love to do it!

Bangladesh is still run by families who own everything from chicken farms to shipyards and brick crushing works to shopping centers. But bubbling under there are these young, educated and smart people who have established their own start-ups.

Unfortunately there isn't much support or understanding for the brave pioneer work these young people are doing for their country. It is not appreciated enough by the power greedy vote-chasers who always bow towards the fattest wallet in the room. Well, well. Short-sighted, I say. Let's change this.

Let me list here few interesting ones. Just to give some new directions for the politicians to bow at. If anyone of them happens to read this.

If you take a look at those you will see that Bangladesh has take steps beyond garments, textiles and ship-breaking. Expect amazing from Bangladesh.

And what an interesting task we have at hands! Me and Heikki will get busy!
